From October 1st, Croatian citizens and businesses can expect an increase in electricity and gas prices, as the government has announced a reduction in energy subsidies. While some measures will remain in place, introducing new policies is expected to lead to a slight price increase, which may further strain household budgets already affected by high living costs and inflation.
It is important to note that electricity prices in Croatia are already among the lowest in the European Union. In the second half of 2023, the average electricity price for households in Croatia was 15.8 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), significantly lower than the EU average of 28.3 cents/kWh. For example, Germany and Ireland report prices above 37 cents/kWh, while prices in Croatia are comparable to those in Hungary and Bulgaria, which also have some of the lowest rates in the EU.
Despite these low prices, rising energy costs could become a reality for many households. Given the upcoming changes, installing a solar power plant will become an ideal option for many families looking to reduce their costs in the long term and protect themselves from further price hikes.
